Nairobi National Park is located about 7 kilometers south of Nairobi Kenya; it covers an area of approximately 117km2 and is the only wildlife park in the world that is located so close to the city. Nairobi National Park is the major rhino sanctuary in Kenya for breeding and restocking other parks. Nairobi National Park is also known as Kifaru Ark which means “ Rhinoceros Sanctuary” It’s one of Kenya’s most successful sanctuaries and every visitor is guaranteed to see black rhinos in their natural habitat.
The park is home to over 100 mammals species having four of the Big Five, which includes Lion; Buffalo’s, Leopard and Rhinoceroses Other Animal species includes zebra’s, giraffes, baboons, wildebeest and numerous reptiles. Nairobi National Park has over 500 bird species thus making it a birdwatcher’s paradise as well.
Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
Sheldrick Wildlife Trust operates an orphan elephant rescue and wildlife rehabilitation in Kenya. It was founded in 1977 by Dame Daphne Sheldrick to honor her late husband David Sheldrick who was the founding warden of Tsavo East National Park. It is located in Nairobi National Park and is open to the public one hour a day. Sheldrick Wildlife Trust raises orphaned elephants, rhinoceroses amongst other animals and they are later integrated back to the wild.
Giraffe Centre
Giraffe Centre is located in Langata approximately 20 kilometers from Nairobi town. It was established in order to protect the vulnerable Rothschild giraffe that is found only in grasslands of East Africa. The late Jock Leslie-Melville founded the Giraffe Centre in 1979. There are now over 300 Rothschild giraffes safe and breeding well in various Kenyan National Parks. Giraffe Centre gives visitors both local and international an opportunity to come into close contact with the world’s tallest species The Giraffe.
